AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
What AVID is:
AVID is an acronym that stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID is a year-long academic elective that helps prepare ALL students for advanced classes, college eligibility, and success. The mission of AVID is to ensure that students will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in society.
The AVID student:
The AVID student is someone who has the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but may be falling short of their potential. AVID helps to put these students on the college track: acceleration instead of remediation. Students are selected into the AVID program after completing an application and receiving teacher recommendations.
Why all Huskies are AVID scholars:
AVID principles are incorporated into all Hamilton classrooms. You will notice all Huskies carrying an AVID binder: an organizational tool to help students maintain notes and school work in one place. All Huskies also learn to take Cornell notes as they prepare for High School and beyond. The entire Hamilton Community celebrates college readiness each October culminating in College Knowledge week complete with Dress for Success Day and a teacher alma mater door decorating contest.
