Hamilton Families,

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a joyful holiday break. Coming back to school after time off can bring a mix of emotions for our middle schoolers. Some are excited to see friends, while others might feel anxious, overwhelmed, or even a little grumpy as they get back into routines.

Middle school is a big time of change, emotionally, socially, and physically, so it’s completely normal for your child to have mood swings or strong feelings. They may feel:

Anxious or stressed about homework, tests, or social situations Excited and curious to reconnect with friends and share holiday experiences Sensitive or frustrated if friendships are rocky or routines are hard to readjust to

Here are a few ways you can support them:

Listen first: Give them space to talk about their holiday and how school feels right now. Normalize feelings: Let them know it’s okay to feel excited, stressed, or even a little off-balance, it’s all part of growing up. Keep routines consistent: Sleep, meals, and homework schedules make transitions smoother. Encourage self-care: Physical activity, hobbies, and downtime help them manage emotions. Model healthy coping: Share how you handle stress so they see examples in real life. Stay in touch with teachers: If your child seems unusually anxious or withdrawn, reach out—we’re here to support you and them.

Right here in the trenches with you, Kiesha Johnson Dean of Culture: Community, Belonging & Celebrations
