  • NEW START & END TIMES FOR 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR

In Christian's Corner, Heads Up on

    May 1, 2019

    Dear Hamilton Families,

I am writing to inform you that our start and dismissal times have officially been changed for next school year.  Effective for the 2019-2020 school year, each school day at Hamilton will start at 9:00am and end at 3:45pm.

Why this change?  As I have been communicating throughout this school year, our elected teachers on our School Leadership Team, along with our Collaborative School Committee, have been exploring this topic.  Together, we heard from families and staff and studied the research from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which clearly finds that middle schools should not start before 8:30am. Middle school students learn much better and are healthier with later start and end times.  Research shows this, and our teachers see this every day. We are supporting healthier middle-school-age youth by making this change.  Furthermore, this change will allow for our entire staff to collaborate each morning to plan for more effective teaching and learning.  Our new 3:45pm dismissal time will allow more students to arrive home closer to when their families return home from work, creating better conditions for evening-time supervision and academic supports.  This revision also aligns more effectively with evening events at school and in the community, increasing students’ ability to participate.

What do you need to know? We know that this change will bring important benefits as well as some logistical challenges for some of our families. It is our goal to help all families in need of support in thinking through challenges.  Here are key facts to know:

    •         Classes start promptly each morning at 9am and end at 3:45pm in the 2019-2020 school year
    •         Students are allowed to go to their lockers at 8:50am each morning
    •         Free breakfast continues each morning.
    •         We will have morning study hall and breakfast for students who need to be dropped off at 7:45am.
    •         We are working on logistics for afternoon athletic supports so that our student-athletes are well supported in this change
    •         You need to make sure that your middle school student goes to bed at an appropriate hour each evening so that this change supports healthier youth.  It is recommend that middle school youth get at least 8-10 hours of sleep each night.

What if I need help addressing challenges?  Please reach out to our Community Liaison, Carolyn Leahy, for direct supports.  She can be reached at Carolyn_Leahy@dpsk12.org or by calling Hamilton at 720-423-9500.  Ms. Leahy is currently working on carpooling supports for those who need that. Additionally, starting this Friday, May 3, from 7:30-8:30am each Friday morning, we will be available in the Community Room to support families needing to talk with us about this change and get help with challenges.

    Respectfully,

    Christian Sawyer, Ed.D

    Hamilton Middle School Principal

    Respetuosamente,

    Christian Sawyer, Ed.D

  • DONATE IN THE SUMMER – CLOTHES TO KIDS OF DENVER

    In Heads Up on

Even when school is out for the summer, CTKD continues to provide clothing to students in-need or in-crisis. Warm weather clothing stretches farther than cold weather clothing but the families we serve have a need year-round.
If you have clothing that you would like to donate over the summer, you can bring them directly to the CTKD store. CTKD is located in the University Hills South Shopping Center at 2890 S. Colorado Blvd., 80222 (cross street is Amherst). It is the plaza with Walgreens and Sprouts Market.
Our store is tucked into the corner of the shopping plaza and can be tricky to find. The entrance to the store is directly across from the entrance to the Chez Artiste Theater, underneath Tuesday Morning and next to the Hairline Barber Shop. Drop off hours are from 9am-5pm on Tue/Wed/Thur and 9am-3pm on Fri/Sat. If you drop off after hours, there is a grey collection bin like the one in the Hamilton lobby outside our door.
When you donate to CTKD, your clothes go directly to students in need or in crisis. CTKD serves students from pre-K through 12th grade so adult sized clothing is needed too. All donations should be clean and ready to wear. More information about this local non-profit organization HERE.
Questions? Contact the CTKD Volunteer Coordinator.
