Dear Parent or Guardian:
As part of our effort to support the Whole Child, our school will be implementing a universal social and emotional screening for scholars, it is called the Behavioral and Emotional Screening System (BESS).
Universal social and emotional screening can provide a fair and impartial way of looking at how scholars are progressing in their social and emotional development. Screenings can also help identify areas where school personnel can improve or adjust our supports.
Universal social and emotional screening is NOT an assessment or an evaluation. Instead, screenings are a useful tool to help identify scholars who may need extra social or emotional support.
Denver Public Schools currently uses a social and emotional screening questionnaire called the Behavior and Emotional Screening System (BESS). The online tool takes approximately fifteen to thirty minutes to complete and consists of 28 questions for the student to answer. Scholars will be completing the screening during their Advisory Class.
The social and emotional screening may occur two or three times over the course of the school year. Repeated screening helps us determine if the supports we provide to scholars are effective in meeting their needs.
The BESS is an evidence-based, universal screening tool that Denver Public Schools utilizes to proactively identify and respond to the social-emotional needs of scholars. It is not an assessment or evaluation.
Hamilton Middle School is committed to ensuring that each of our scholars has strong access to Whole Child Supports. This screener helps us accomplish this goal utilizing a comprehensive, data-driven approach.
All Hamilton Middle School scholars will complete the BESS unless their parent or guardian opts them out by filling out an opt out form by submitting this form. Fall screening will take place September 13- October 22, 2021. La Escuela Intermedia Hamilton se compromete a garantizar que cada uno de nuestros estudiantes tenga un fuerte acceso a los apoyos integrales para el niño. Este evaluador nos ayuda a lograr este objetivo utilizando un enfoque integral basado en datos.
Todos los estudiantes de la Escuela Intermedia Hamilton completarán el BESS a menos que sus padres o tutores los excluyan al completar un formulario de exclusión al enviar este formulario.
