Youth Substance Use: Why Youth Use, How to Prevent Use, and How to Intervene If Your Child Is Using

September 25 at noon

Participants of this webinar will gain an understanding about why youth might experiment with substances, such as nicotine and cannabis, learn how adults can prevent adolescent substance use, and how to intervene when a loved one is using.

Dr. Bonnie Halpern-Felsher, a developmental psychologist, will share her knowledge about youth substance use. Dr. Halpern-Felsher is the founder and director of the Tobacco Prevention Toolkit, an online curriculum aimed at reducing and preventing youth tobacco use. Her research has focused on understanding and reducing health risk behaviors such as tobacco use, alcohol and marijuana use, risky driving, and risky sexual behavior.

Spanish interpretation will be available. Register here.

RTD Transportation (Zero Fare for Youth)

Important: The Zero Fare for Youth program has been voted by the RTD board to continue moving forward.  This means students in the Denver metro area will continue to ride for free.

To board the bus or train, students will need to show one of the following items:

  • Current school ID
  • Valid government-issued ID
  • Alien registration/permanent resident card
  • Military ID/dependent card with DOB
  • RTD-issued youth special discount card

Even though RTD is allowing students of all ages to ride for free, DPS strongly encourages parents/guardians to ride with their elementary school and middle school students.

Care Solace Behavioral Health Care Coordination

We are excited to announce DPS’ continued partnership with Care Solace, an organization that provides critical Behavioral Health Care Coordination as an added layer of support. All DPS students and their family members, as well as all DPS employees and their family members, have access to this service. Navigating the behavioral health care system is challenging, and we are committed to removing barriers to finding the right care or treatment that meets your unique needs. Care Solace provides a care companion to quickly and confidently find available providers in the community. This includes providers who speak a variety of languages and who provide telehealth and/or in person services. Visit the Care Solace/DPS webpage to learn more about the services.

Sunny September at the Hampden Branch Library!

As August comes to a close, our busy summer season is simmering down. For this month, we have a couple events to offer along with our regular free programming at the Hampden Branch Library.
We’ve added a new service, legal immigration consultations from 5:30-6:30pm the second Wednesday of each month during Plaza. These are free, informal Q&A’s with a volunteer lawyer. Service also provided in Spanish. The flyer for this service is attached below.
We’re getting Homework Helpers as well, so keep an eye out for that this school year as we iron down dates!
