Thank you to all the 8th grade families that came out to High School Night at Hamilton last night. We had a really nice turnout. We had 5 area High Schools in attendance to answer your questions and help make an informed decision before choice enrollment opens up. Thank you to Thomas Jefferson High School, George Washington High School, Denver Center for 21st Century Learners, Denver East High School and DSST: Cedar High School. Your attendance at our event was instrumental in ensuring families were aware of their options going forward. Families, if you were able to fill out our BESS survey we very much appreciate it. If you did not fill out the survey, see below for more information and a link to the survey.
Parents, guardians, and caregivers: please fill out this 5 minute form to help provide valuable insight on how we can better support students at HMS.
As part of our effort to support the Whole Child, our school will be implementing a universal social and emotional screening for students.
Universal social and emotional screening can provide a fair and impartial way of looking at how students are progressing in their social and emotional development. Screenings can also help identify areas where school personnel can improve or adjust our supports.
To complete the parent portion of the screener, please take the form linked here.
Universal social and emotional screening is NOT an assessment or an evaluation. Instead, screenings are a useful tool to help identify students who may need extra social or emotional support. Additionally, universal screening allows HMS to adapt school-wide and/or grade-level or classroom programming to meet the needs of the student body.
Denver Public Schools currently uses a social and emotional screening questionnaire called the Behavior and Emotional Screening System (BESS). The online tool takes approximately ten minutes to complete and consists of 28 questions for the student to answer.

If you have not filled out the YouBenefit form yet for this school year, please consider doing so. More than half of our families have already submitted it. The school receives funding based upon our participation rate and we would greatly appreciate it if every family could complete it. As well, My Spark awards eligible families up to $1000 for students to spend on extracurricular activities in January, based upon the YouBenefit submissions.

Dear Parents and Guardians;
Lately, there has been a social media trend circulating about misusing products like Galaxy Gas more formally known as nitrous oxide. Here is a video clip from a recent segment on Morning in America describing the concern. CCN Health has an article on the topic as well. In addition, Yale published a study on the concern and the importance of early treatment. All the recent reports discuss how nitrous oxide can be harmful to adolescents’ developing brain, and nervous system and in some instances can be fatal.
As parents, you are the most important people in your child’s life and your involvement is the number one factor in preventing your child from experimenting with alcohol, cannabis, and other drugs. Here are some evidence-based tips on having conversations with your student about substance misuse.
These five strategies have been shown to help prevent alcohol and other drug use
by adolescents.
The full article can be read here and Spanish translation.
If you need more support related to adolescent substance misuse, please contact Maria Hite, LCSW, Substance Use Prevention Float at maria_hite@dpsk12.net or 720-423-9499.
