Ramadan at Hamilton Middle School

What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is observed by Muslims around the world as a month of fasting, reflection, prayer, and community. It is a time for spiritual growth and self-discipline, during which fasting from dawn to sunset is practiced.

When is Ramadan?
Since Ramadan follows the Islamic lunar calendar, the dates change each year. In 2025, Ramadan is expected to begin on the morning of Saturday, March 1, and end on the evening of Tuesday, April 1, with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr marking its conclusion.

How Do Muslims Observe Ramadan?

  • Fasting (Sawm): Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, and other physical needs from dawn (Suhoor) to sunset (Iftar).
  • Prayer (Salat): Increased prayers, including nightly Taraweeh prayers, are performed. Students will have one prayer opportunity during the school day, which is Dhuhr at 12:10 PM. They will be allowed 5-10 minutes to pray.
  • During lunch, students who are fasting will have the option to stay with Ms. Huwaida in the auditorium.
  • Charity (Zakat & Sadaqah): Giving to those in need is highly encouraged.
  • Reflection & Community: Ramadan is a time for self-improvement, spiritual reflection, and spending time with family and community.

How Can Hamilton Middle School Support Students During Ramadan?

  • Understanding & Flexibility: Be aware that fasting students may experience lower energy levels. Teachers can provide understanding and allow students to participate in low-energy activities when needed.
  • Alternative Spaces During Lunch: Some fasting students may prefer a quiet space during lunch instead of the cafeteria.
  • Academic Considerations: If possible, avoid scheduling physically demanding activities or major exams late in the day.
  • Encouraging Inclusivity: Respect and acknowledge students observing Ramadan and encourage a culture of support and understanding.

Eid al-Fitr
The end of Ramadan is marked by Eid al-Fitr, a celebration that includes communal prayers, festive meals, and giving to charity. Many Muslim students may take this day off to celebrate with their families.

If you have any questions about Ramadan or how to support students, please feel free to reach out to the administration. Thank you for fostering an inclusive and understanding school environment!

Best,
Hamilton Middle School
